Virginia, New Jersey and Trumpism

Overreach. A phenomenon so common it can be confused for a physical law of politics. It's a point Democrats should remember as they celebrate sweeping wins in NJ and VA on November 7. While the election may have been a referendum on Trump, it was not a rejection of Trumpism. Why? As John Sides argues in the Washington Post, the GOP has been moving in a Trumpist direction for a while now. Democrats are increasingly liberal and Republicans increasingly conservative, particularly when it comes to issues like immigration. Which means, from a campaign perspective, national elections will be base affairs, won with razor thin margins.
