It affirms one's belief in democracy when voters reward public officials for leading with character and making decisions without regard for political cost. Such is the case for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who was re-elected last month with a solid 65 percent of the vote.
Mayor Cantrell has faced a cascade of crises in her first term: hurricanes, floods, a cyber attack, a power outage and of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. What sets her apart is the ability to discern the right thing to do when there's no clear or easy answer. Shut down a city whose economy depends on tourists? Without hesitation, if it means saving lives. Go to the state capitol to negotiate a greater share of tourism tax dollars for her city, even when every mayor before her has failed at the task? Absolutely, if it means helping deliver better service to her people.
We're proud to work with Mayor Cantrell and look forward to four more years of progress in one of America's great cities.
