Does President Trump Have a Denominator Problem?

We have long been suspicious of the resiliency of President Trump's support among Republicans, hypothesizing that it might indicate a denominator problem. That is, his support may appear stronger that it is because the number of people identifying as Republicans may be shrinking. Recent research out of Emory University suggests this may in fact be the case.

This is consistent with something we noticed while researching the Nixon piece above. Given comparable overall approval ratings on Trump's 184th day in office and Nixon's 1631st, Trump's support among Republicans is at 86 percent, while Nixon's was at 67 percent, suggesting that Republicans in 1973 could disapprove of President Nixon without leaving the party.
